Individual Therapy and Psychotherapy in Athabasca
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy or psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy between the client and therapist. My practice is rooted in an anti-oppressive, judgement-free framework, with a strong emphasis on Attachment Theory and the functioning of the nervous system.
Many people encounter adverse events in their lives that overwhelm their capacity to cope. These experiences leave unresolved emotional residues that become stored or ‘frozen’ in the body and nervous system, leading to long-term physical, emotional, and cognitive impacts.
Trauma is fundamentally physiological in nature (Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing). In moments of threat, we don’t have time to rationalize – we instinctively respond through biologically-hardwired survival mechanisms (i.e. fight, flight, freeze, or fawn).
For children, common events like abrupt separation (i.e. divorce, death, getting lost), medical procedures, accidents, bullying or witnessing violence can overpower their developing systems. Without adequate support, these overwhelming experiences may become lodged in the nervous system, shaping how the body and mind react well into adulthood.
Trauma does not reside in the event itself, but in how the nervous system holds the experience. These stored experiences may later manifest as anxiety, somatic pain, dysregulation, or negative self-beliefs. Our work with adults is to explore the cause-and-effect patterns of these embodied experiences, recognizing that what the body held to survive may now be asking to be released.
To support your healing process, we integrate somatic experiencing and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) into therapy. These modalities are evidence-based approaches that facilitate the resolution of trauma by helping the body and brain safely process and release the frozen trauma.
Depending on your circumstances, we may integrate other modalities and psycho-social education into your therapy plan.
